Glocal Affairs

During Glocal Affairs, Pieter Geenen will be presenting his film “atlantis” (2008). The film is a visual and auditory exploration of the Three Gorges Reservoir, which is a section of the Chinese Yangtze River in which the Three Gorges Dam is presently being built. This major project is scheduled for completion in 2009. The social and ecological effects have already been enormous. For example, millions of people have been forced out of their houses, as adjacent areas will be inundated over a distance of 660 km.

In “atlantis” we see the banks of the Three Gorges Reservoir as they are scanned by the searchlights of a cruise boat. This probing light bundle explores a drowned universe - a land from which human beings have fled, filled with destroyed buildings, desolate forests and ghost ships.
