"What is most beautiful in virile men is something feminine; what is most beautiful in feminine women is something masculine." Susan Sontag, Against Interpretation, 1966

The work by Anneke Eussen evolves around gender issues. The girl-figure is the most important character in her work. Contrary to history in her work it is not the male, but the girl that brings saviour and strength. Her installation for Glocal Affairs refers to the ancient Greek sculpture “Kriophoros”. In Greek mythology this figure saved the city of Tanagra by carrying a ram on his shoulders. There are numerous examples in mythology where the combination of the human figure with an animal symbolizes a mysterious power. Placing this aspect in a more contemporary context and replacing the male character by a young girl, Anneke Eussen tries to push ‘our predetermined expectations’ into new views on existing role models.
