In 1859, 150 years ago, Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution in the book “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life”. Religious dogmas were thus superseded and a new definition of mankind was made possible. To keep us alert in a time of religious fundamentalism and creationism, this work by Hans Lemmen is a golden tribute to Sir Charles Darwin. The sketch of a “Tree of Life” is an illuminating bolt of lightening descending upon the heavens from the temple of science.
(At the time of writing, it is not yet clear whether the University of Liège will grant permission for the art work to be created on its building by the pedestrian bridge “la Passerelle”. )
